Wedding on Mount Etna: Simone and Chloe’s Ceremony Amidst Lava Stone and Katanas

A cosmopolitan union on the slopes of the volcano
What happens when the energy of Sicily meets the spirit of Texas? Simone and Chloe’s wedding is the answer to that question. He is a true Sicilian, she is Texan, and they chose to celebrate their love in a place that is not just a location, but a genuine natural monument: Mount Etna. For a wedding photographer in Giarre, having the opportunity to document a union so full of meaning is a privilege that goes beyond a simple profession.

Sunrise on Etna and the Handfasting ceremony
The celebration began at the most magical time of day: dawn. As the first rays of sun filtered through the characteristic Etna birches and illuminated the dark lava stone, Simone and Chloe exchanged their vows.

It was not a conventional ceremony. The couple chose handfasting, an ancient Celtic tradition where the couple’s hands are tied together with colored ribbons, symbolizing the union of two souls. As a photographer in Catania and Taormina, I am used to breathtaking scenery, but the contrast between Celtic symbolism and the lunar landscape of our volcano created an atmosphere suspended in time.

From the exchange of Katanas to the atmosphere of Sant’Alfio
Another extraordinary element was the exchange of Japanese katanas. This gesture, steeped in respect and honor, added a further layer of cultural depth to the wedding. Documenting these details requires special attention: the low light of dawn is perfect for enhancing the reflections of the steel and the texture of the surrounding lava, creating dynamic and deeply narrative shots.

After the intensity of the morning on the volcano, the celebrations moved to Case Perrotta in Sant’Alfio. This location, nestled in greenery and cloaked in a magical atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for the exchange of vows before relatives and friends who had traveled from afar. The evening was a tribute to conviviality, where the flavors of Sicily blended with stories of lives lived overseas.

The mission of a photographer in Giarre and Catania
For me, working as a photographer in a small town like Giarre, strategically positioned between the elegance of Taormina and the energy of Catania, is a constant stroke of luck. Seeing couples choose our land for the most important moments of their lives makes me proud and reinforces my mission: not just to take photos, but to capture the essence of a meeting between cultures.

Being a wedding photographer in Sicily today means being ready to interpret different rituals, changing light, and cosmopolitan desires. Every destination wedding is a technical and emotional challenge that pushes me to always seek compositional perfection.
